16 to 19 Bursaries

In September 2011 the Government introduced a Bursary Fund providing support to young people from less advantaged backgrounds, living in England, to meet the cost of participating in Post-16 education and training.

If you are living in care, a care leaver, receiving income support or are disabled in receipt of Employment Support Allowance and also in receipt of Disability Living Allowance you will be eligible to receive a bursary of up to £1,200 a year.

If you are eligible for free school meals or your household income is less than £28,000 you may be eligible for a bursary of up to £950.

NB: Please note that, while the information in the BOA Bursary Policy 2023-24 is mostly accurate, the payment amounts are outdated and the correct figures are outlined above, to take annual inflation and the cost of living into account.

SCHEDULE:

At the start of the academic year, you should submit your application for a 16 to 19 bursary by 30th September.

If your circumstances change at any point in the year, you can still apply for the bursary and, at the Principal's discretion, the payments may be backdated.  We cannot backdate any payments to include the previous academic year.

YEAR 12:

As all 16 to 19 bursaries are dependent on good attendance, you must first enrol and demonstrate good attendance ahead of the Academy making any payments.  The 16 to 19 bursary is split into 6 equal payments (one per half term) across the academic year.  If your application is successful and you have demonstrated good attendance, you will receive the first payment by the third week of October. This payment will include the backdated payment for the first half term and will include the payment for the second half term (Nov-Dec).  All subsequent payments will be made at the start of each half term.
