16-19 Study programmes

All ESFA funded education for 16 to 19 year olds must be delivered as a study programme which combines qualifications and other activities, and which is tailored to each student’s prior attainment and career goals. Every study programme must have a core aim. For the majority of students, this will be either the study of substantial technical, applied or academic qualification(s) or preparation for employment.

Young people who do not hold a GCSE grade 4 (reformed grading) or grade C (legacy grading) in maths and/or English are required to continue these subjects as part of their study programme.

All study programmes should include work experience and non-qualification activities, which complement the other elements of the programme and support the student to progress to further or higher education or to employment.

At BOA our annual study programmes are planned as follows:

Qualification  (540+ Hours)

Core Qualification:

  • Pathway Qualification (BTEC) (540+hours)

Options:

  • Up to two A-levels (150-300 hours)
  • Extended Project (150 hours)

English and Maths (up to 180 Hours)

For students who do not have a GCSE grade 4/C

  • GCSE Maths resit (90 hours)
  • GCSE English resit (90 hours)

Non – Qualification Hours (60+ Hours)

  • Weekly tutorial, 1-1 tutorials and Personal Development Time (60 hours)
  • Work experience and exposure opportunities
  • Support with UCAS applications and progression planning
  • Contribution to student led businesses/projects

We are lucky to have a large portfolio of creative industry partners who offer students a range of work experience and exposure opportunities across all pathway specialisms. Students choose which opportunities to pursue and the total hours logged per year varies from learner to learner.

Students have access to additional 1-1 support consultations and workshops, delivered by our progressions team to support them in planning for their future and applying for Jobs and University placements. Participation is optional, so the hours accrued vary by learner.

Students who are lucky enough to secure positions in our student led businesses can expect to commit anywhere upwards of 50 hours a year to this element of their programme of study. The student led businesses currently include VoiceofBOA, B2Radio, BOATV, BOAMarketing, BOAGames, Eastsidedesign and various Dance Groups.
