The Dance Department took their end of year show to the Crescent Theatre, Birmingham. This was the first time the department has used this theatre, and it was an excellent experience for the students and staff.

'Exhibition' was a dance show inspired by famous art works and artists. All students danced in Contemporary, Jazz, Ballet and Commercial pieces. They also collaborated on a group 'community art' piece.

The range of dance styles, music and costumes made for an excellent performance that brought the paintings to life - such as Van Gogh's 'Starry Night' and JMW Turners 'A Stormy Sea' and Edvard Munch 'The Scream' to name a few.

This performance demonstrated excellence from the dance department staff - from slick choreography and creative ideas, to the outstanding sheer talent within the cohort of students, especially their ability to adapt from style to style throughout the performance and to execute the movement with such energy and precision. The students really are an absolute credit to the department and school.

This performance was also an excellent opportunity for the dance course to collaborate with BOA Stage and Screen's Broadcast students who were invited to film the performance on a 4-camera set up and create and live edit of the show. We will share this performance with dance students in September.

We are so excited for next year where we can share our Year 13 Show with you.

Our Year 10 Dance pathway show, 'Liberate' was a tribute to powerful and influential women in society. The show was performed by an all-female cast of dancers featuring several powerful dance pieces set to a soundtrack of well selected songs and music pieces.

Some of the notable performances told the story of influential women such as Rosa Parkes and Greta Gerwig and historical figures such as Florence Nightingale and Cleopatra. There were also more modern influences such as Madonna and the Lionesses.

The show was a real collaboration between staff and students with the support of BOA Stage and Screen's technical theatre students.

The student talent on stage was truly inspirational. As dancers, they all brought a real sense of performance and flare. Their passion and drive as a year group really stands them in good stead for Year 11 and we look forward to what they will bring in next year's performances.

Our inaugural group of Year 10 and 11 DofE students set out on their Bronze Qualifying and Silver Practice expeditions amidst the breathtaking landscapes of the Long Mynd in Shropshire. Over the Easter break, these young adventurers braved the elements, pushing their limits and stepping well and truly out of their comfort zones with a challenging three-day hike, covering approx. 50km.

Despite facing some of Britain's most relentless spring weather conditions – rain, wind, sleet, and even a touch of snow – the students rose to the challenge with solid determination. Their two (very cold) nights of wild camping became a test of endurance, resilience and spirit. However, teamwork emerged as the basis of their success - as, unified by a common goal, the students supported one another every step of the way; sharing lots of snacks, stories, and a few songs to keep morale high.

Having completed their Bronze Qualifying and Silver Practice expeditions, our students now turn their attention to the next phase of their DofE journey. For our Bronze award participants, this includes completion of their Skills, Physical, and Volunteering sections. Meanwhile, our Silver award group eagerly anticipates their next challenge – the qualifying expedition in the heart of North Wales this July (where we cross our fingers for drier weather!).

The highlight of our trip was a camel trek through the Sahara to our campsite, set amongst huge sand dunes. We climbed the dunes for sunset and sunrise the next morning. It was a truly magical experience and the stars at night were breathtaking! We stopped off at the Atlas film studios on our way back to Marrakesh and students made their own short films as well as seeing the sets of some of the biggest blockbuster Hollywood movies such as Cleopatra and The Mummy. It was a pleasure to take the BOA students on this geographical journey.

Spread over two performances spaces in the venue, our music students first took to the courtyard stage to perform a series of original acoustic tracks from 5pm to 6pm before moving into the basement space where the main show began. Students are encouraged to think about audience experience and to curate their own boards in a professional manner highlighting their favourite and most significative artworks. Exhibitions are great opportunities to show your work and to evolve as an artist as a more critical eye is developed through conversations with others in the build-up to the event. This year, students have been curious, committed and challenged themselves in the production of artworks for the occasion pushing their boundaries and being daring. From large scale drawings to portraiture in a variety of media or 3D wood and metal work, these cohorts delivered a showcase that evidenced their talent, manifested their skills and fed from their interests and artistic motivations.

Our Actors took to the stage at The Old Rep Theatre to perform modern adaptations of classical works. First up was Macbeth, directed by Mrs. Cowell and Mr. Lees this production was full of energy, song and battles! Next we had Women of Troy directed by Miss. Emery and Mrs. Allen; a moving piece with a real focus on women empowerment, with a bit of vogue sprinkled in! Finally, Romeo and Juliet directed by Mrs. Di Cesare; a show filled with emotion and powerful performances. All of our Y12 actors worked incredibly hard and showed such improvement over the rehearsal process. Our Y10's closed their busy season with a performance of Burying Your Brother in the Pavement, directed by Mr. Lees and Mrs. Cowell. The show tackled sensitive issues with real thought and detail. Our KS4 Acting Company lead by Y13 Directors performed Bite Back with incredible force, incorporating their own writing into some real stand-out performances. And lastly, our KS5 Company performed Cat on a Hot Tin Roof directed by Mrs. Di Cesare. Ending our season on a real high with some fantastically detailed portrayals. We are so proud of our actors, the commitment they have shown to not only their shows, but their craft this year has been incredible.
